== About ==

Most of the VUB resources require a VPN connection to access them from outside the campus, you need a VUB or a VUB partner account to connect.
You will need to contact us in order to obtain this VPN account, as NetID will '''NOT''' work!
So just send us an email describing which resource you are trying to access (put as much details as possible).
Requests typically take 24-48h to be processed by the VUB support team.

There are not a great many good solutions to generate TOTP tokens on a laptop.
The one we recommend is [https://keepassxc.org/ KeepassXC]

== Installation ==
Please refer to the [https://keepassxc.org/download download and install] section of the KeepassXC website for your OS.

== Configure TOTP ==
TOTP is mostly used in combination with a smartphone. Therefore, most sites generate a QR code that encodes a TOTP secret in your mobile TOTP application.
To be able to use a TOTP generator on your laptop, we need to copy the secret.
=== Find your TOTP secret on your mobile phone===
* Open your TOTP mobile app. For each site that this app manages, you see an entry. Per site, you will see three dots in the upper right corner.
* Click and choose 'edit account'
* There you will find the secret key.
* Copy this key and send it to your laptop.

=== Add secret to your Keepass vault ===
* Open Keepass and create a new database if you do not have one already. A Keepass Database is meant to store your passwords. However, we recommend to keep your passwords and TOTP tokens in separate applications. If you choose to use Keepass for both, then make a separate database for both and use different passwords to lock the different databases
* Once you have a database, add a new entry (entries -> new entry)
* Add the basic information (TOTP cannot yet be added in this stage) and push OK.
* Right click on your new entry -> TOTP > Set up TOTP
* Add your secret key and press OK.
=== Using your TOTP ===
Once the secret key is added, KeppassXC can generate the tokens you are used to.
* Right click your entry > TOTP > Copy TOTP
* Your token can now be pasted into the website you try to access.
* Test your token. If it does not work, it might mean that the defaults with which the secret was imported were not correct. Have a look if your token was indeed SHA-1 (99% of the cases).

There are not a great many good solutions to generate TOTP tokens on a laptop.
The one we recommend is [https://keepassxc.org/ KeepassXC]

== Installation ==
Please refer to the [https://keepassxc.org/download download and install] section of the KeepassXC website for your OS.

== Configure TOTP ==
Open your TOTP mobile app. For each site that this app manages, you see an entry. Per site, you will see three dots in the upper right corner.
Click and choose 'edit account'
There you will find the secret key.
Copy this key and send it to your laptop.

=== Add secret to your Keepass vault ===
Open Keepass and create a new database if you do not have one already. A Keepass Database is meant to store your passwords. However, we recommend to keep your passwords and TOTP tokens in separate applications. If you choose to use Keepass for both, then make a separate database for both and use different passwords to lock the different databases
Once you have a database, add a new entry (entries -> new entry)
Add the basic information (TOTP cannot yet be added in this stage) and push OK.
Right click on your new entry -> TOTP > Set up TOTP
Add your secret key and press OK.
=== Using your TOTP ===
Once the secret key is added, KeppassXC can generate the tokens you are used to.
Root: /* Install another distribution */

==WSL==

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a feature of Windows that allows developers to run a Linux environment without the need for a separate virtual machine or dual booting.
There are two versions of WSL: WSL 1 and WSL 2. WSL 1 was first released on August 2, 2016, and acts as a compatibility layer for running Linux binary executables (in ELF format) by implementing Linux system calls on the Windows kernel.

===Prerequisites===

*Windows 10 version 2004 and higher (Build 19041 and higher) or Windows 11.

===WSL Configuration===

*Start an elevated terminal by pressing on Windows key + X and choose terminal (admin) then type the following command :

wsl --install

This command will install all needed components for WSL and '''Ubuntu 22.04 distribution''' by default.

''if you prefer another distribution you can specify it with the -d argument ([[#Install another distribution|more info at the end of this section]]).''

*'''After the configuration is completed you need to restart your computer.'''

*After having restarted your computer you need to specify a username and a password then your WSL Distribution is ready to use.

*To connect over SSH with X11 forwarding use the -X argument in your SSH command :

ssh username@hostname -X

===Install another distribution===

You ca use the -d argument to specify another distribution to be installed by WSL, use the following command to get the distribution that are available :

wsl --list --online

At the time of writing this documentation the following distribution can be installed using WSL :

NAME                                   FRIENDLY NAME
Debian                                 Debian GNU/Linux
kali-linux                             Kali Linux Rolling
Ubuntu-18.04                           Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Ubuntu-20.04                           Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Ubuntu-22.04                           Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
OracleLinux_8_5                        Oracle Linux 8.5
OracleLinux_7_9                        Oracle Linux 7.9
SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-Server-15-SP4    SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP4
openSUSE-Leap-15.4                     openSUSE Leap 15.4
openSUSE-Tumbleweed                    openSUSE Tumbleweed

For example to install Debian use the following command :

wsl --install -d debian

Root:

1. Look at the pre-requisites on the [https://root.cern.ch/build-prerequisites CERN website]
:For '''ubuntu''', you need to do:

sudo apt-get install git dpkg-dev make g++ gcc binutils libx11-dev libxpm-dev libxft-dev libxext-dev

:and I strongly suggest installing the optionnal packages too:

sudo apt-get install gfortran libssl-dev libpcre3-dev xlibmesa-glu-dev libglew1.5-dev libftgl-dev \
libmysqlclient-dev libfftw3-dev cfitsio-dev graphviz-dev libavahi-compat-libdnssd-dev libldap2-dev python-dev libxml2-dev libkrb5-dev \
libgsl0-dev libqt4-dev

2. Download the latest release from the [https://root.cern/install/ CERN download page]
:a. Click on the latest release
:b. Under '''Binary distributions''' (ie already compiled for a specific platform), download the tar.gz file appropriate to your platform
::* To get your '''ubuntu''' version, type '''cat /etc/lsb-release''' in a terminal
::* To get you gcc version, type '''gcc --version'''. Your release number need to be the mentioned one (whatever the minor version is, ie like 4.8[.1]).

3. Extract the compressed tarball:
tar xzf root_v6.06.02.Linux-ubuntu14-x86_64-gcc4.8.tar.gz
:This should create a directory called root. You can move this directory wherever you want.

4. To use RooT, you need to source the script '''thisroot.sh''' available in root/bin.
:To make root available anytime from your terminal, edit your .bashrc file, and add the following line at the end (replace ~/root with where you put the extracted directory):
# Enabling RooT
source ~/root/bin/thisroot.sh

Et Voila !

This page explain the procedure to enable X11 forwarding with SSH on Windows 10 & 11 using Powershell or WSL.

==Powershell==

PowerShell is a task automation and configuration management program from Microsoft, consisting of a command-line shell and the associated scripting language.
Since version 5.1 Powershell includes open-ssh utility allowing user to use it to connect to SSH without the need of a third party software.

===Prerequities===

*A device running at least Windows Server 2019,Windows 10 (build 1809) or later.
*PowerShell 5.1 or later.

===Creating SSH keypair===

Start Powershell using shortcut windows key + X, then type the following command to create your key :

ssh-keygen -t ecdsa

Follow the steps to create your '''ECDSA''' SSH keypair.

Once the key are generated you need to install Xming

===Installing Xming===

Get the installer from [https://sourceforge.net/projects/xming/files/Xming/ this page], then install it.

Note that you can install Xming using Chocolatey :

choco install xming -y

Ensure Xming is started before continuing.

===Enabling x11 forwarding===

Start Powershell and paste the following command :

$env:DISPLAY= 'localhost:0.0'

(you need to type this command each time before using x11 forwarding.)

Now connect to SSH server using '''-X''' argument :

ssh username@hostname -XY

X11 forwarding is now enabled on Powershell.

===Prerequisites===

*Windows 10 version 2004 and higher (Build 19041 and higher) or Windows 11.

===WSL Configuration===

===Install another distribution===

You ca use the -d argument to specify another distribution to be installed by WSL, use the following command to get the distribution that are available :

wsl --list --online

At the time of writing this documentation the following distribution can be installed using WSL :
